The Town of Charlestown is presently accepting employment applications and resumes for the position of Public Safety Dispatcher. This is a union position with a starting salary of $45,068.00, and progressing over several annual steps to $55,332.00. There is a six month probationary phase upon employment, longevity increments after five years, and a generous benefit package. Eligible applicants must be at least twenty one (21) years of age, have a minimum of a high-school diploma or GED and possess excellent communication skills. Some experience in public safety dispatching or emergency services is preferred, but not required.

Charlestown Public Safety Dispatchers dispatch both police, fire and ambulance personnel to emergency and non-emergency calls for service. They are trained to operate radios and computers along with answering telephones on a regular basis. Candidates must be able to carry out oral and written instructions, efficiently and effectively handle public contact through telephone and walk-ins. Must have the ability to learn the operations of a base station radio, and our computer aided dispatch / records management system. Candidates must successfully complete a rigorous dispatch training program during their probationary phase. It is imperative that a successful candidate be able to multitask during stressful situations. The hours of work required are based on the public safety dispatcher's contract and will include day and/or evening shift work, holidays, weekends and emergency order-ins when necessary. Eligible applicants will undergo an extensive public safety background investigation and reference check prior to employment.
