Assistant Harbormaster
The Town of Charlestown is seeking qualified candidates for the part-time position of Assistant Harbormaster. The Charlestown Harbormaster Program exists to promote safe boating practices through public education and the enforcement of local, state, and federal boating laws. Harbormasters assist in the implementation of the town’s harbor management plan, including the management of the town’s mooring program and the enforcement of coastal pond’s ordinances and regulations. Harbormaster duties are focused around the Town’s recreational waterways of Ninigret and Quonochontaug salt ponds and breachways. Three (3) Assistant Harbormasters report functionally and administratively to the Harbormaster, all of whom work within the Town’s police department. Harbormasters are expected to work cooperatively with all state, local and town agencies and staff.
Successful applicants should possess the ability to work in a marine environment for extended periods of time. They should be able to work in inclement weather, and be available on weekdays and/or weekends as maybe necessary. Boat operator skills and prior experience in either law enforcement, public safety, the US Coast Guard, or other marine employment is preferred but not required. Qualified applicants should be ambitious and self-motivated individuals, and possess good interpersonal and de-escalation skills. Applicants must provide proof of completion of an approved boater safety course or boating license, and will be expected to successfully pass an employment background check.
Starting wage for Assistant Harbormaster is $24.00 per hour.
