Newly Installed Public Beach Camera Stolen in Disgraceful Act Against the Community

The Town of Charlestown is outraged to report that a newly installed public-access coastal camera was stolen on August 6, 2026.

The camera had recently been installed to replace an earlier unit that was destroyed after its mounting pole snapped during a severe storm. Town staff worked with the University of Rhode Island to restore this valuable public service, providing residents, visitors, researchers, and educators with live access to local beach and coastal conditions.

To be absolutely clear, this was not a Flock camera. It was a publicly identified beach camera intended to provide a live view of coastal conditions and support public access, safety, research, and coastal education.

Claims circulated suggesting that the equipment was a Flock camera were completely false and demonstrated a basic failure to understand—or even verify—what had actually been installed. A minimal amount of effort would have confirmed that the camera’s purpose was public viewing and coastal education, not vehicle tracking or law enforcement surveillance. Spreading uninformed accusations does not make them true, and it creates needless suspicion around a project developed openly for the benefit of the public.

This was not an abandoned piece of equipment or a private surveillance device. It was a clearly identified public-access camera installed for the benefit of the entire community. It allowed people to view real-time beach and water conditions, supported coastal education, and contributed to ongoing efforts to better understand and protect Charlestown’s shoreline.

Stealing this camera was not a harmless prank. It was a selfish, destructive, and criminal act that deprived the public of a resource funded, installed, and maintained for everyone’s benefit. Considerable time and effort went into coordinating the project, installing the equipment, and restoring a service that had already been lost once because of severe weather.

It is deeply disappointing that after Town employees and project partners worked to replace the storm-damaged camera, an individual decided that personal greed, reckless misinformation, or senseless vandalism was more important than a resource serving the entire community.

The person responsible did not steal from an anonymous government agency. They stole from Charlestown residents, beachgoers, students, educators, coastal researchers, and every member of the public who used the camera to safely and responsibly view conditions along the shoreline.

The Town is asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity near the camera or who has information regarding its removal to contact the Charlestown Police Department. Anyone currently in possession of the equipment is strongly encouraged to return it immediately.

Charlestown will not allow the selfish actions of one individual—or the careless misinformation spread by those who never bothered to learn the facts—to diminish the Town’s commitment to public access, coastal education, and responsible stewardship of its shoreline.
