Breachways

Ninigret and Quonochontaug Ponds provide sheltered waters for all boaters allowing for many types of activities from watersking and tubing to a sunset cruise with friends. But for those looking to venture out to Block Island maybe to grab some lunch with the family, or for the sport fishers looking for the next big catch, there is a way out.

Ninigret and Quonnie both have Breachways that provide a means of access to the open waters of Block Island Sound. As the tides change within the ponds, so do the conditions of the Breachways. The currents experienced in the Breachways can be quite swift and difficult to navigate for the inexperienced boaters. While they provide a way in and out they can also be very treacherous and conditions can change in a matter of minutes. Those who are new to navigating the Breachways should do so with extreme caution.

See the links below for and exploded view of the Breachways as well as a description of each as provided by the United States Coastal Pilot.
