Animal Control
Adoption Policies/Procedures
Welcome to the Charlestown Animal Shelter. Please, take your time and visit the pets available. Our hours of service are: Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. However, since we offer Animal Control Services, we advise you to call prior to a visit to assure the staff is available.
After visiting with the potential new addition to your family, you will be asked to fill out an application. The application is designed to help us determine if the adoption is in the animal’s best interest, and to assist us in finding the pet most compatible with your lifestyle. Please keep in mind that all of the companion animals that currently reside at our Shelter come from various backgrounds. As a potential adopter, you need to be aware that these animals will require an abundance of love, patience, understanding, training and time to bring them to their full potential and become the friend that you want him/her to be.
Upon approval of the application, all animals that are of the proper age are spay/neutered, vaccinated, and given the appropriate tests (dogs: heartworm tested; cats: leukemia/aids tested). A reasonable donation is requested for these services, which are funded solely on your kind contributions.
As a potential adopter, you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Have identification showing proof of your current residence.
- Have landlord’s consent to bring an animal onto the property and in residence.
- Understand that all donations/fees are non-refundable.
- Understand that the A.C.O. has the full authority to approve, delay, or deny your application.
- Understand that the person filling out the application must be the potential adopter.
- Understand that we cannot guarantee the health and/or temperament of any animal.
- Understand that failure to answer any questions completely and truthfully will result in a delay or refusal of your application.
- Understand that this transaction is not a purchase, it is a lifetime commitment.
Thank you for considering adopting a companion animal from our Shelter.
