Building Commission
On January 13th, 2003, the Town Council appointed a Building Commission. This commission was voted upon as a Charter Change at the November 2002 election. We are currently looking for volunteers that are interested in serving on this commission.
There shall be a Building Commission of members appointed by the Town Council for staggered terms of office lasting three years. One member shall be first appointed for one year, two members for two years and two members for three years. All appointees thereafter shall be appointed for three years. Appointment to fill a vacancy shall be for the unexpired term. One member of the Council, one member of the School Committee and the Town Administrator shall serve as ex-officio members with no voting rights.
When the Commission is serving as a building committee for a specific municipal project, the Council may appoint up to four additional members with voting rights. When the Commission is serving as a building committee for a specific school project, the School Committee may appoint four additional members with voting rights.
Additional members appointed by the Council or School Committee shall serve only for the duration of the specific municipal or school project and shall only have a vote for the specific project for which they were appointed.
Appointees to the Commission shall have expertise in the financing, building managing and maintaining of facilities.
Duties of the Commission
Each year by October 1st, the Commission shall complete an inspection of all town facilities and report in writing to the Council, the Town Administrator and the School Committee on the condition of all municipal and school facilities. The commission also shall make recommendations for repairs and improvements and these recommendations shall be considered in preparing the next fiscal year’s budget.
The Commission also shall become the building committee for specific projects the town may undertake for municipal or school needs. It works with and makes recommendations to the appropriate governing body.
